Better than Nutella

My trail diet has drastically improved since I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail as a twenty-one year old. Gone are the days of Pop-Tarts for breakfast and Little Debbie brownies after lunch. I learned that calories don’t always equal energy and that sugar can make you slower. BUT, I gotta be honest, I still like the sweats!

The reasons I hike include mental clarity, nature therapy, and treats like Nutella. But within the past few years I have replaced this food bag staple with a healthier alternative. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Blasphemy! How can you replace Nutella?! It is one of the best trail foods ever. You can slather it on sandwiches, dip granola bars into it and eat it like soup - except for when it freezes. ” That’s what I thought until I tried Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter, which is even more delicious and made with better ingredients. Plus it comes in these single serving packages which are perfect for stashing in your pockets or the hip belt of your backpack for a quick pick me up.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that it is made in Boulder. Why do all the really outdoorsy things feel the need to originate in Boulder?! But beyond that, Justin has completely won me over. We eat the chocolate hazelnut spread at home, on the trail, and I’ll vouch for their other nut butter flavors as well. I’m pretty sure I’ve had them all... and they’re all good.
