I’m so glad you asked—because, frankly, I had no idea what it was until recently, when one of my conservation heroes, Josh Kelly at MountainTrue, reached out to sound the alarm. In his words, “The Roadless Rule is the most important environmental regulation that no one has heard of. It protects 58 million acres nationwide and 152,000 acres in Western North Carolina.”

Unpacking What Just Happened
Come-aparts, otherwise known as breakdowns, fall aparts, and meltdowns, come in all different shapes and sizes. They can happen on a mountaintop or a Walmart aisle. They can involve tears or yelling, or happen in complete silence. It’s a moment to stop fighting or fleeing or simply surviving—and to surrender to the tangled emotions and exhaustion that come with crisis or trauma. An emotional exhale. An off-gas of repressed feelings. A loosening grip on everything you’ve tried to control. And I’m pretty sure they are just as important to the healing journey as my anti-inflammatory foods, hippie herbal teas, prescribed shoulder rolls, and mandated rest.

Religious Ramblings on Pain Meds
I once had a pastor who was diagnosed with cancer say, “I don’t believe God caused the cancer, but I believe He’s too good not to use it.” And that has felt and seemed true of late. It is often the challenges in life that bring us into a deeper knowledge and understanding of God, and the struggle that reveals divine gifts of peace and gratitude. This has been one of the hardest weeks of my life… and undoubtedly holy.
