In the end it all became clear
It took walking 1,175 miles across North Carolina to realize that I am no longer a “long-distance hiker.” I am a mom who shares the trail with my kids; a professional who needs a break from work; a wife who wants to walk a few miles with my husband. My relationship with the trail is more diverse and comprehensive than it used to be. I don’t need to be a thru-hiker to enjoy the affects of long-distance hiking. (And that’s good because Brew says I’m not doing another hike like this for a LONG time.)

Connection precedes protection.
Charley has reminded me that some of life’s most important lessons can’t be taught, but have to be learned through experience. Hearing about pollution inside a classroom and reading about wildlife in a book is important, but there is no substitute for being inches away from a sea turtle, spending time at the ocean, and being empowered to make a difference.

I have spent my days climbing mountains, passing farmland, and enjoying the serenity that comes with hiking long trails. Brew, meanwhile, has been busy changing diapers, searching for lost pacifiers, and trying to keep mold from overtaking Gus’ sippy cup.

The counties that I have passed through have all looked and felt very different, but the aspect of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail that stands out in comparison to my other long distance adventures is the wide range of people I have passed on the trail.

The Best Beauty Products
As my diet has changed and gotten better over the years, I have noticed a similar trend in my self-image. The more natural the food is that goes into my body, the better and more beautiful I feel. I have finally realized that what I put inside my body, the source of my daily energy and wellbeing, can also provide a direct connection with nature.
